Re: EMTF Hybrid Morning Speaker Series

December 3rd, 2025, 7:00am
Hybrid Presentation, 7:30am

Roadmap for SaskPower’s Future Distribution System and Organization - The Saskatchewan electric grid is undergoing a major transformation to meet evolving customer needs and emerging technologies. This session will introduce SaskPower’s Distribution Transformation (DT) effort, also known as Grid Modernization, explaining why these initiatives are critical for utilities, energy industry professionals, and the broader energy ecosystem.

    We’ll explore:
  • Why Grid Modernization Matters: The impact and integration of electric vehicles (EVs), distributed generation (DG), and smart technologies and why “building bigger” is no longer the most cost-effective solution.
  • EV Impacts: Understanding how varying ‘speed of charging’ impacts the grid in residential vs commercial areas
  • DG Impacts: Key attributes of various DG resources and how they interact with and impact the grid
  • Smart Technology: How advanced tools and automation are reshaping grid operations.

The session will also highlight related initiatives, including:
  • Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and substation metering for granular planning data
  • Data analytics tools for forecasting and decision support
  • Peak Load Management (PLM) programs
  • Distributed generation and heating electrification programs

We’ll also discuss how these changes impact customers, energy consultants, and energy service delivery companies shaping new opportunities, challenges, and expectations across the energy value chain.

Join us to learn how these efforts work together to create a smarter, more resilient grid and what it means for energy management professionals.
