Re: EMTF Hybrid Morning Speaker Series
May 1st, 2024, 7:00am
Hybrid Presentation, 7:45am
Our May presentation is all about a fairly hot topic in Saskatchewan these days, WATER.
We invite you to come, listen and discuss the proposed Lake Diefenbaker Irrigation Expansion Project.
Presentation Overview: In 2020 the Government of Saskatchewan announced that work would begin immediately on a $4 billion plan to irrigate some 500,000 acres (200,000 ha) of land from Lake Diefenbaker over a 10-year period. This would double the irrigated area in the province. The work would be done in three phases and earlier this year a start on Phase One was announced, albeit at a doubling of the anticipated cost. This presentation will review the project from public policy, economic and environmental perspectives.
R. A. (Bob) Halliday: Bob is the former president of R. Halliday & Associates, a water resources engineering consultancy. He previously worked for Environment Canada and was director of Canada’s National Hydrology Research Centre. His company projects have dealt with transboundary waters, floodplain management, drainage investigations, effects of climate change on water resources, and state of the basin reporting. He has served on several International Joint Commission boards and other entities related to water issues between Canada and the United States. He has also worked overseas, primarily in China and Latin America. Bob is the vice-president of the Saskatchewan Environmental Society and past president of the Canadian Water Resources Association, Saskatchewan Branch. His other interests include water and energy matters.
